The most comfortable flats are a closet staple. Not only are they super comfy, but they make commuting simpler (no more shoe changes at your desk!), running errands more enjoyable, and level up just about any outfit. These shoes pair perfectly with everything from summer dresses to bike shorts and a sweatshirt. Besides versatility, flats, or rather shoes without high heels, make for great comfy, easy-to-walk-in kicks.
“Flats should be comfortable as soon as you put them on,” explains Anne Sharkey, D.P.M., a podiatrist at North Austin Foot & Ankle Institute. “Materials should not cause skin rubbing, blisters, or irritation.”
Meet the experts: Anne Sharkey, D.P.M., a podiatrist at North Austin Foot & Ankle Institute; Paul Greenberg, D.P.M., a podiatrist at NYU Langone Podiatry
From ballet flats to loafers to sneakers to slingbacks to sandals, the most comfortable women’s flats run the design gamut. Differences in style aside, Sharkey says there are some things that each comfy flat should have. “Look for flats that allow room for your toes without excessively squishing them,” Sharkey says. “Flats that have some support are going to be most comfortable in the long term.”
However, Paul Greenberg, D.P.M., a podiatrist at NYU Langone Podiatry, says truly flat shoes are not the best move. “The human foot functions most efficiently when it’s lifted up. The most comfortable flat is a flat that has a little bit of a heel,” he says. But, he’s not suggesting you stock up on stilettos. Instead, opt for a very low heel, like a 1/2-inch off the ground.

Ahead, find the most comfortable flats, including ballet flats, flats for wide feet, and so much more.
Pros
- Machine washable
- Available in 31 colors and patterns
- Cushioned insoles
Cons
- No heel height
Sharkey’s number one pick happens to be a cult favorite known for repurposing unique materials (like water bottles and algae) to create stylish shoes. She recommends the brand as a whole, for its “soft and flexible material, variety of toe box shapes to choose from, and cushioned insole.” Available in sizes 5-13 and 31 colors and patterns, there’s truly a shoe here for everyone. The brand says these shoes are machine washable and don’t stretch too much after wearing, so be sure they fit when you buy them.
Prevention Editor-in-Chief Sarah Smith says, “I wear Rothy’s all the time and I never worry that I’m going to regret my choice of footwear by the end of the day!”

Most Comfortable Flats Sandals
Kuru Effortless Style, Adjustable Comfort
Pros
- Stylish
- Super-soft footbed
- Minor flatform
Cons
- Runs a bit big
After transversing New York City (and Maine, and Florida) in these sandals over the summer, I can confidently recommend them for their comfort. With perhaps the softest footbeds I’ve ever experienced, these flats have a bit of lift (which Greenberg mentions to look for) and a sturdy sole. While I wouldn’t recommend getting caught in the rain in these (a suede-like footbed and leather straps don’t play well with water), these have been my go-to shoes for months.

Sharkey recommends Revitalign’s flats for their “podiatrist-designed orthotic footbed [and] great support.” Available in three colorways (bleached sand, blue stone, and iron gate) and in sizes 6-12, these comfy flats are a great option.

Most Comfortable Flats for Wide Feet
Birdies The Starling
Pros
- Available in medium and wide widths
- Available in 18 colors and patters
- Highly rated
Cons
- Some reviewers say they stretch out after wearing
There’s a reason Megan Markle loves this shoe brand (yes, they’re royalty-approved!). And tens of thousands of reviewers agree. With over 35,000 ratings and nearly five stars on the brand’s website, these flats come in wide and medium widths and are available in half sizes from 5-13, making it easier to find your perfect fit. “Love that they have wide sizes, been hearing great things about birdies and knew I had to get some. The normal sizes were a bit narrow but I’m glad the wide is back,” writes one satisfied customer.
Pros
- Arch support
- Podiatrist-designed
- Go with many outfits
Cons
- Some reviewers say they run small
While ballet flats are notoriously low on support, these were created by Vionic, a podiatrist-designed brand. The brand features a wide variety of styles to choose from, each including arch support, according to Sharkey. Though a bit pricey, these will pair perfectly with any outfit in your closet, making them a wardrobe essential. Amazon shoppers love these, too, with over 2,000 ratings and nearly five stars.
“Unable to wear heels anymore and needed a dressy shoe that is comfortable and supportive. This shoe is all of the above. It is a snug fit like a second skin but it truly isn’t too tight and provides needed support,” writes one Amazon shopper. “I thought it might be too flat but the arch provided in the insert is perfect. After walking around in them, they truly ‘break in’ and feel like you aren’t even wearing a shoe. Worth the investment.”

Birkenstock Unisex Arizona Sandal
Pros
- Contoured footbed
- Arch support
- Editor-loved
Cons
- No back
Long favorited by podiatrists, Birkenstocks may be some of the most comfortable flats on the market. The brand’s contoured cork footbed molds to the shape of your foot. Meanwhile, major arch support with an extra layer of super-soft foam cushioning and a deep heel cup and roomy toe box makes these super comfy. We even named an iteration of these sandals as the best shoes for wide feet.

- Great for walking
- OrthoLite hybrid sock liner
Cons

“Hoka is leading the way in cushioning and comfort right now in the shoe market,” Sharkey previously told Prevention for our roundup of the best walking shoes for women. One of the most cushioned options in Hoka’s lineup, the Bondi 8 uses an EVA midsole for a plush feel. “These will make activity feel like you are walking on clouds!” says Sharkey. And they come in 20 colorways and in sizes 5-11. They also feature an OrthoLite hybrid sock liner, per the brand.

Most Comfortable Flats for Small Feet
Hush Puppies CORA Loafer
Pros
- Affordable
- Fun colors and patterns
- Available in wide widths
Cons
- Some reviewers note that the shoes lose support after some time
“They have the perfect level of all-over cushioning and arch support, and the toe box hugs my toes without being too tight/squished while standing, while still allowing for the natural spreading that occurs when we walk to prevent blisters or pain,” says Alyssa Jung, senior editor, health newsroom. “I have small, narrow feet, so finding flats that fit is a tough job and I usually strike out, but these are never at risk for slipping off while I walk.”

Most Comfortable Slide Splurge
Marion Parke Raquel Slide
Pros
- 0.4-inch heel
- Patented insole
- Slide-on
Cons
- Pricey
While this shoe is definitely an investment, Sharkey recommends Marion Parke for the brand’s “splurge-worthy high-end flats with patented insole support.” According to the brand, its triple I insole helps center the heel of the foot over the heel of the shoe, adapts to the natural curve of your foot, optimizes fit, increases stability, and reduces fatigue and pressure on the ball of the foot.

Pros
- Lug sole
- Small heel
- Neutral color
Cons
- Pricey
- Has a bit of a heel
I’ve spent upwards of 500 hours wearing these boots all over NYC, and they’re still my go-to. Though these are expensive, they’ll last for many seasons. And they pair perfectly with just about everything. Made with a leather upper and a rubber lug sole (which Greenberg recommends looking for in a comfortable flat), these are great fall and winter boots. Though these have a 1.8-inch height, their platform style makes them feel like flats.
Pros
- Highly rated
- Machine washable
- Fitted collar for snug fit
Cons
- Some reviewers note they wear down quickly
With over 5,600 ratings and nearly five stars on the brand’s website, Allbirds’ Tree Breezers are a customer favorite and we can see why. These machine-washable ballet flats feature a fitted collar to ensure they stay on your feet with each step. Available in eight colors and sizes 5-11, there are plenty of options to choose from. “Love these flats! After bunion surgery, I have sensitive areas in my feet, and these are so comfy,” writes one shopper. “[I have] three colors now. Great shoes!”
How to choose the most comfortable flats
Consider a tiny bit of height. “The most comfortable flat is a flat that has a little bit of a heel,” says Greenberg. “I don’t care if you’re using a sandal, a sneaker, I want a little bit of a heel on it. 1/2 inch is fine. Completely flat is never good whether you have an arch or you don’t have an arch.”
Think of their purpose. Sharkey says that flats should not be used for any “extended walking and/or exercise activity.” So be sure you’re not spending all day in a pair of flats.
Try a stiff sole. “I like something with a stiff rigid sole that doesn’t bend so much, that’s important,” Greenberg says. “Now there are a lot of fashionable shoes that have lug soles and I like those a lot because they’re stiff.”
