Sure, there is a time and a place for a good heel. Platforms are amazing. Heeled boots? Fabulous. But the humble flat shoe, particularly the ballet flat, is now getting its time in the sun. It just goes to show, sometimes a flat sole really is the most stylish way to elevate a look. And yes, a flat is probably going to be more comfortable that a 5 inch stiletto (though there are some exceptions), so these days we are reaching for our mary janes, our loafers, our slides, and our mules oh so much more. Thankfully, there's pretty much a comfortable (and fashionable) flat shoe for just about every aesthetic. Here, some of our favorites.
How much do I love these Mary Janes? Let me count the ways. Not only do they mold to your feet and take virtually no time to break in, the strap is both dainty and makes your foot feel secure. Perhaps even better is the subtle square toe. All around, it's an elegant shoe worthy of ownership in multiple colors.
Pros
- Comfy padding.
Cons
I have long loved the Margaux demi flat and for good reason. They are so damn comfortable thanks to supportive molding and padding. I can truly walk in these all day. Besides, they are just so classic.
Pros
- Laidback look
- Flexible support
Cons
I can't imagine you aren't aware of this already, but if you aren't, Birkenstocks are for the fashion girlies—and Barbie. With the heavenly cork footbed, your feet (and probably your legs) will thank you.

The Skimmer
Sarah Flint Natalie Chocolate Leopard Calf Hair Flat
Pros
- Adds elegance
Cons
The Natalie flat was made popular by Meghan Markle, but I'd argue it's a staple that should be in every wardrobe. The pointed toe doesn't cause pinching and it adds just an extra touch of elegance. I'd also argue that the leopard print works as a neutral...

Trendy Pick
Le Monde Beryl Leather-trim mesh Mary Jane flats
Pros
- Combines multiple trends.
Cons
Mesh, ballet flats, and mary janes are all trending so why not combine all three? Le Monde Beryl's flats are anything but flimsy due to the expertly crafted sole, and you can wear them for hours on end while still looking fashion forward. What more could you ask for?
Pros
- Wardrobe workhorse.
Cons
Ok, ok, this loafer has a little bit of a heel, but to me, this still counts as flat. I love mine and appreciate that with a slightly thicker sole, I can be on my feet longer. Plus the dual tone color palette makes them better than a basic. And the tapping in the heels and the toes as you walk? It makes you feel powerful.

Pros
- Great for transitional weather.
Cons
I love a fisherman sandal because you really can wear them most seasons in the year. Emme Parson's version, which is timeless and oh so sophisticated, yet still minimal, is my all time favorite.

The Venetian Slipper
VIBI VENEZIA Velvet slippers
Pros
- Dresses up easily
Cons
Venetian slippers are often overlooked, but I'd argue their seasonless, yet comfortable design make them an essential in any wardrobe. Like these rich red slip ons with grosgrain trim? Lush. And they make anything you pair them with look dressed up without having to add heels. Your arches will thank you.

Linea Paolo Linea Paolo Delica Slingback Pointed Toe Flat
Pros
- Looks expensive
Cons
Silver shoes are going to be a huge trend for fall. Why not opt for a pair that is both well-reviewed and reasonably priced. As one reviewer writes: "Fit perfectly with no break in period. Wore them all day and were very comfortable! The silver is just the right amount of shiny and looks more expensive than it is. Love!"
