Here’s today’s Final Jeopardy (in the category Landmarks) for Monday, December 5, 2022 (Season 39, Game 61):

In 2009, during a 20th anniversary celebration, it was called “an edifice of fear. On Nov. 9, it became a place of joy”

(correct response beneath the contestants)

Today’s Jeopardy! contestants:

Ben Hebert, a shipping manager from Chicago, Illinois
Today's Final Jeopardy - Monday, December 5, 2022 (1)
Steph Martin, an editor, writer, and proofreader from Lakewood, Colorado
Today's Final Jeopardy - Monday, December 5, 2022 (2)
Cris Pannullo, a customer success operations manager from Ocean City, New Jersey (20-day total: $710,865)
Today's Final Jeopardy - Monday, December 5, 2022 (3)

Andy’s Pregame Thoughts:

Last week, Cris Pannullo won $184,321 on the show. He definitely had to work for it, though—he survived a couple of scares. Right now, he’s sitting at 20 victories and is going for win #21 today, against Steph Martin and Ben Hebert.

PSA: The best way to keep COVID-19 at bay (and keep Jeopardy! producing new episodes) is for everybody to get their vaccinations as soon as they can, including any boosters as recommended. When wearing a mask, please ensure that your mask covers both your nose and your mouth.

The quotation comes from former German president Horst Köhler, at the 20th anniversary celebration of the tearing down of the Berlin Wall—a literal barrier between East Germany and West Germany.

This should be a fairly straightforward Final Jeopardy! today, as long as players can do the requisite math, remembering what happened on November 9, 1989. It’s clear to me that the writers put November 9 into the clue in order to steer players away from June 4 of the same year—namely, Tiananmen Square.

Also, a clue about a historical event such as this one has got me thinking: Jeopardy!—even just the current syndicated version—began airing before a number of massively significant news events—now historical events—took place. The show faced widespread pre-emptions in the wake of the Challenger disaster in January 1986, September 11, 2001, the Nixon funeral in 1994, even the entry of the United States into the Iraq War in 2003. In a Jeopardy! context, though: the Berlin Wall was still up as Season 6 of the show was beginning in the fall of 1989.
