I really like this time of the year. It starts and then keeps going on.

In fact, the Navratras are also considered as the period of cleansing by a lot of people and they fast during this time of the year.

But the other story to it is related to Goddess Durga and her nine avatars, each of which is worshipped on one specific day in these nine days.

This is how these 9 days signifies each of these incarnations –

Day 1 – Shailaputri: Shailaputri means “Daughter of the Mountain”. In fact, this is an incarnation of “Parvati”. She is also considered as the direct incarnation of “Mahakali” and it is in this form that she is worshipped as the consort of Shiva.

Day 2 – Brahmacharini: Goddess Bramhacharini is another incarnation of “Parvati”. She is so-called because this is the unmarried self of Parvati, the “Sati”. Brahmacharini is worshiped for emancipation or moksha and endowment of peace and prosperity.

Day 3 – Chandraghanta: Chandraghanta is so-called because after marrying Shiva, Parvati adorned her forehead with the half-Chandra. She is considered as the embodiment of beauty and a symbol of bravery.

Day 4 – Kushmanda: This incarnation of the goddess is considered to be the creative power of the universe and she is associated with the vegetation on the earth. She is always shown as having eight arms and sitting on a tiger.

Day 5 – Skandmata: Skandmata is the mother of “Skanda”, also called “Karthikeya”. She is always depicted as holding a baby which is symbolic of the transforming strength of a mother when her child is confronted with danger.

Day 6 – Katyayani: This avatar of the goddess is born to the sage Katyayana and is also known as the warrior goddess. This incarnation is considered as one of the violent forms of Goddess Parvati.

Day 7 – Kalaratri: This form is considered the most ferocious form of Goddess Durga. It is believed that Parvati removed her fair skin to kill the demons Sumbha and Nisumbha. She is always depicted as wearing a white color attire though the color of her skin is dark with fury and rage. This white color depicts prayer and peace and assures her devotees that she is their protector.

Day 8 – Mahagauri: This avatar of the goddess stands for optimism, intelligence, and peace.

Day 9 – Sidhidhatri: This avatar is also known as “Saraswati Devi” and is considered as the source of Knowledge and education. She is called “Siddhidatri” because she is considered to be the one who possesses and bestows all types of Siddhis.

Fasting during the Navaratri is considered good for both mind and health. A lot of people hence fast during these days.

Whatever is the significance of these days and these festivals, I enjoy the sheer positivity that they bring in. I wish the same positivity and prosperity to each one of you as well.
