How To Make Portobello Mushroom Burgers (Top-Rated Recipe!) (1)

I have a history of featuring spotlight ingredients that I actually don’t like in the hopes that by cooking with them nonstop for a few weeks I’ll grow to like them (see tomatoes, cucumber, watermelon).

And mushrooms? They were on the top of the list of “Foods I Don’t Eat”. Because I trulythought I didn’t like mushrooms.

Until these Portobello Burgers. These burgers were my gateway to loving mushrooms! I’m not saying this to talk up these burgers, guys. I’m saying this because it’s the fact! The cold hard fact. I woke up thinking I didn’t like mushrooms, decided to give portobello mushroom burgers a go, and went to sleep dreaming of all the ways I could continue cooking up mushrooms. So…let’s make some burgers shall we?

Yay, so happy to hear! I’d tried a few different versions of portobello burgers before, but this is by far my favorite (especially with a thick slice of melted cheddar)

We just enjoyed this meal for dinner. Everyone loved it! The sauce was amazing and I may use it just for my french fries. I will be remaking this for sure. Grateful for a new recipe to get us out of our dinner rut. We omitted the cheese due to lactose intolerance. How To Make Portobello Mushroom Burgers (Top-Rated Recipe!) (15)

Super tasty flavor! This recipe is a definite keeper, and we will make these often. 1/2 Tablespoon of harissa added to 1/4 cup of mayonnaise is another sauce alternative. We also added bread and butter pickles to our burger. Excellent portobello burgers! How To Make Portobello Mushroom Burgers (Top-Rated Recipe!) (17)

First time trying portabella mushrooms in a burger. I used the mushrooms as buns but the sauce and the marinade still tasted great on the mushrooms and patty. I added in sautéed onions. The mushroom did release some water so it was little messy eating but it was delicious. I chose this recipe because it was simple and fast to make. I’m glad l did. I finally convinced my hubby to add some vegetarian options to our diets, and we have designated Monday as “meatless.” Neither one of us was too sure about eating a portobello mushroom burger, but we gave it a try and WOW we were surprised and delighted. These are delish! I’ve made them a couple of times now and they never disappoint. Love the “Fancy Sauce,” too. Just yummy! How To Make Portobello Mushroom Burgers (Top-Rated Recipe!) (23)

I don’t have Portobello mushrooms BUT can I substitute with button mushrooms sautéed in pan with olive oil, soy sauce, lemon, etc.? Grill buns and melt cheese on top and finish with the sauce? I would love to prepare this for my husband who loves mushrooms.

    • Sarah says

I think that would work! Maybe melt a slab of cheese onto the mound of mushrooms 😀

FAQs

Which side of portobello to grill first? ›

What Side of a Portobello Mushroom Do You Grill First? It doesn't matter! Just make sure you flip the mushrooms halfway through grilling so both sides are cooked evenly.

Why can't you eat the gills of a portobello mushroom? ›

When cooked down, the gills release their spores, giving your dish a dark and murky appearance and obscuring other, more vibrant ingredients. This may not seem significant, but we eat with our eyes first—a dull looking dish can prime our palates to expect dulled flavors.

Is it safe to eat the gills of a portobello mushroom? ›

Yes, the dark gills of portobello mushrooms are edible. However, most chefs remove them as they darken the color of the dish they are using them in. Why remove gills from portobello mushrooms? Most people remove the mushroom gills during the cleaning process because dirt or sand may hide in the gill structure.

Can you eat the gills of a mushroom? ›

Mushroom gills are totally edible, but in some cases, they make a dish unsightly. Thankfully, removing them is pretty simple. Most recipes that call for mushrooms don't require that you remove the gills on the underside of the caps.

What is the first rule of grilling? ›

GENERAL GRILLING TIPS

The first rule of grilling, according to Bob Barton: Don't be in a hurry. If using charcoal, wait until the coals are white ash. Don't be impatient with meats on the grill; turn when they are ready to be turned, not a minute before.

Should you grill with the lid up or down? ›

The heat doesn't build up and intensify the way it would if the lid was down. Thin pork chops, shrimp, and burgers tend to cook quickly. Leaving the grill lid up will slow the cooking process by reducing the temperature around the meat. For thicker cuts, you want to close the lid to keep the temperature high and even.

How do you know when a portobello mushroom is ripe? ›

The largest of all cultivated mushrooms, the standard culinary portobello is harvested at full maturity when the brown, slightly flaky cap measures 10–15 cm (4–6 inches) across. At this point the cap is nearly flat, and its underside reveals fully developed dark brown gills.

What order do you grill vegetables? ›

Grill the vegetables starting with the heartier peppers and onions first (or in the hottest area if your grill has hot spots); followed by the eggplant, squash, zucchini, mushrooms; then quick cooking asparagus; and finally, the tomatoes.

What meats go on the grill first? ›

What should you cook first on a BBQ? As a general rule of thumb, the best order to cook food on a BBQ is starting with a thick piece of meat that typically takes a while to cook (for example chicken and sausages), so we'd recommend cooking them first.

What side of tri tip do you cook first? ›

Start with the fat side up (in truth it makes no difference. "If you put the fat side of the tri tip on the fire first, the moisture will come up through the meat and make it tender.") The problem I have with this is that, as the fat warms, it will drip down into the fire and will not evaporate until it's in the fire.

Do you grill meat or vegetables first? ›

Grill Meat First on a Charcoal Grill: When grilling vegetables to accompany steak, chicken, or pork, we cook the meat first, while the fire is at its hottest. By the time the meat is done, the heat has subsided a bit and the vegetables can cook at more moderate temperatures while the meat rests.
