Gather your ingredients.
Step 2: Add ingredients to the bowl
Begin by pouring the brown sugar into a medium sized bowl, one that's large enough to stir in.
Add in the coconut oil.
Pour the honey into the bowl.
Finally, add in the cinnamon. We only used 1/4 teaspoon, but you can add more if you'd like a stronger scent.
Step 3: Mix!
Mix well until the ingredients are completely combined.
You can add more sugar if the mixture is wet, or more coconut oil if it's too dry.
Your DIY body scrub is complete!
Read below for how to store your homemade sugar scrub.
Helpful Tips:
- You can also combine the ingredients in a food processor or with an immersion blender to make a whipped body scrub.
- Don’t use body scrub on sunburns or other areas of sensitive skin.
How do I store DIY body scrub?
It’s best to store the body scrub at room temperature in an airtight container. Keeping it in a cool and dry location will help to extend the shelf life of the scrub.
You cankeep the jar in your shower, but keep in mind that the ingredients might separate and that water can introduce bacteria and mold. If you need to keep the scrub in your shower, use a smaller jar and discard the scrub if there are any changes in smell or texture.
How long does DIY body scrub last?
As long as the sugar scrub is stored properly (see above), it should last for 3 to 6 months since none of the ingredients are perishable. Honey helps it last longer, since it’s a natural preservative with antibacterial properties.
To extend your body scrub’s shelf life, use clean hands or a spoon to scoop out the scrub and avoid introducing water into it.
Do I have to use sugar to make homemade body scrub?
We love the gentle exfoliation that sugar (especially brown sugar!) provides. But there are several alternative ingredients you can use to help exfoliate your skin.
- Salt: Sea salt and Epsom salt are great for more intense exfoliation. This is especially recommended for rough areas, like feet and elbows, meaning it may be too harsh for sensitive skin.
- Coffee grounds: They provide a gentle exfoliation and may even help minimize cellulite and dark circles. The caffeine in coffee can also reduce inflammation.
- Oatmeal: Oatmeal is very gentle and soothing, great for all skin types. It fights against dry skin by locking in moisture.
What kind of scents can I use in my DIY body scrub?
Adding a scent to your body scrub recipe is completely optional, but we love the aromatherapy element! We used ground cinnamon, but you can also use pumpkin pie spice or dried herbs like lavender or rosemary.
You can also add 10 to 20 drops of essential oil into your sugar scrub. Bergamot, or another citrus scent, is very refreshing for summer, while ginger or cinnamon oils are cozy for winter.
Flavored cooking extracts (used in baking) are another option to add scent to your scrub. But don’t add too much of these, since they have alcohol in them and may be drying to your skin. Cooking extracts also tend to shorten the shelf life of the body scrub.
How often can I use homemade body scrub?
You can use body scrub 2 to 3 times per week. If your skin is especially sensitive, it’s recommended to only use the scrub once per week.
What are the benefits of the ingredients in this DIY body scrub?
The natural ingredients in this body scrub have different properties that make them really beneficial for your skin! Here’s what each of the ingredients does:
Sugar:
Provides gentle exfoliation that removes dead skill cells without causing microtears. It helps to create smoother, softer skin and it’s easy to rinse off without leaving a residue.
Coconut oil:
A great moisturizer, that also has antibacterial properties. It strengthens the skin’s natural barrier to create healthier, more radiant skin.
Honey:
A very hydrating ingredient that also soothes the skin, providing antioxidants. Honey also has natural antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory properties that promote wound healing.
Cinnamon:
While cinnamon adds a nice scent to our body scrub, it’s also a mild exfoliant that can brighten the skin and reduce the appearance of scars. Cinnamon also promotes circulation and has antimicrobial properties, great for fighting acne.
Use DIY body scrub to revitalize your skin! The brown sugar buffs off the old dead skin, while the coconut oil helps to moisturize the new soft skin underneath! Sugar scrub is a great way to spoil yourself and it also makes an awesome homemade gift idea.
