Who goes to Cgsc? ›

Command and General Staff School (CGSS) delivers a ten-month Command and General Staff Officers Course (CGSOC) in residence at Fort Leavenworth, KS, to just over 1,200 U.S. military officers, international military officers, and interagency partners each academic year.

The US Army Command and General Staff College educates, trains and develops leaders for Unified Land Operations in a Joint, interagency, intergovernmental, and multinational operational environment; and advances the art and science of the Profession of Arms in support of Army operational requirements.

The full 44-week CGSS course is offered once a year at Fort Leavenworth, KS, with broad choices among more than 170 elective courses and focused programs in Special, Joint, or Space Operations.

As “officers in a limited sense” and having been appointed to their grade of rank by the President, they outrank ALL enlisted personnel. Sort of, but not really. Academy cadets and mids are on active duty, so they have to go somewhere on the rank table, and they're between E-9 and the Chief Warrant Officers.

CGSC provides graduate level instruction and offers a master's degree program through the CGSS and the SAMS courses to officers who elect to enroll in the program of study. As with any graduate program the requirements for a Masters in Military Arts and Sciences are demanding.

The cognitive science major with honors requires the student to complete the requirements for the major with a GPA of 3.5 or above and to complete in addition CGSC 498 Honors Thesis with a grade of B or better.

What is taught at Command and Staff College? ›

Command and Staff College courses are taught by a military and civilian faculty divided into four departments: Leadership, Warfighting, War Studies, and Security Studies.

Persons may be active duty USAF/USSF, Air Force Reserves (AFRES), or Air National Guard (ANG); sister service active duty, Guard or Reserve or Civil Air Patrol. ANG and AFRES members have the opportunity to enhance their IDE experience during Air Reserve Component Seminars (ARCS).

Officer Training School is a nine-week, four-phase program designed for prior-service Airmen and civilians with a college degree who are ready to take the next step as a leader in their lives and careers.

To attend the USAWC, DACs must be at the grade of GS/GM-14 or higher. Civilians under the National Security Personnel System (NSPS) mustbe in an equivalent pay band. Applicants need to have a minimum of three years in a full-time Department of the Army position and have leadership experience.
