Why This Recipe Works

These little bites of deliciousness would be perfect for any gathering, and they're easy to customize. Add little holly candies for Christmas, hearts for Valentine's Day treats, or leave them plain for birthday parties or any time of year! These make adorable party favors, too. The possibilities are endless!

Using boxed cake mix means you can whip this up in a lot less time, too. Need a dessert at the last minute? This works well in a pinch!

What You Need to Make It

Gather your ingredients. To make this red velvet cake balls recipe, you'll need red velvet boxed cake mix and the ingredients to make it. This is what gives the cake balls such a gorgeous red color. If you have a special recipe for homemade red velvet cake, knock yourself out (and if it's easy, won't you share your recipe?!)

You'll also need chocolate fudge frosting, spiced bourbon whiskey, Ghirardelli white chocolate chips, red candy melts, Wilton confetti hearts, a disposable piping bag (This kit is great for beginners!), a cookie sheet fitted with wax or parchment paper, double boiler, and cupcake pan with cupcake liners. This red velvet cake balls recipe makes 48.

How to Make It

Preheat oven to 350°.

Prepare cake batter in a large bowl as directed on the back of the box.The box will make about 24 cupcakes.

Mix in the 2 tablespoon of the spiced bourbon whiskey. If you don't want the cake balls to be a boozy dessert, just leave this out.

Scoop batter into cupcake liners and bake for 21 minutes.

Once cupcakes have been baked and cooled, peel off the cupcake liners on 10 cupcakes.

Doing only a few cupcakes at a time, crumble cake with your hands into a large mixing bowl.

10 cupcakes will produce enough cake crumbs for 48 cake balls. You will have leftover cake unless you want to make more cake balls.

Add in about 3 tablespoons of the chocolate frosting.

Using a wooden spoon, mix until combined and you have a dough-like texture. If the cake is not sticky enough, add a bit more frosting.

Using a small ice cream or cookie scoop, place a scoop of the cake mixture into your hands and roll into 48 dough balls. After making the balls a couple of time, you'll get on a roll and it will go quickly. See tips below if you're having trouble.

Place those little balls of deliciousness onthe cookie sheet lined with wax paper.

Once all of the dough has been rolled into balls place into the fridge for 20 minutes or freezer for 10 minutes.

Using a double boiler, melt chocolate until smooth.

Once your cake balls have hardened, using a fork and butter knife, dip cake balls into the white chocolate coating and fully cover each one.

Use the fork to scoop up the cake ball and lightly tap the edge of the pot.

Place cake ball onto the cookie sheet.

Repeat previous steps until all cake balls have been rolled and dipped.

Set aside for the chocolate to completely cool.

Wash out your double boiler and dry very well. If you've worked with chocolate before, you know water will change how it reacts.

Pour about ¼ of the red candy melts into the double boiler.

Wait a few minutes and then mix with a spatula until smooth.

Pour melted candy melts into the piping bag.

Cut the tip off of the piping bag and drizzle the candy melt over the cake balls.

Place a pink confetti sprinkle heart or your choice of sprinkles onto the middle of these red velvet treats.

You could also add a lollipop stick and turn these into cake pops!

Let sit for 15 minutes before enjoying these wonderful indulgent treats!

TIPS: If you're having trouble molding your red velvet cake balls, do the best you can and stick them in the refrigerator for at least 2 hours. Once the cake balls are good and cold, roll them on a flat surface until they are nice and round.

If you're making these into cake pops, dip the stick into the melted chocolate before sticking it into the cake pop. Be sure to match chocolate color and do this before drizzling.

Notes

Tip to Make Cake Balls

Remember, if the cake is not sticky enough, add a bit more frosting. Simply keep adding half tablespoons until the cake is sticky enough to stay together. If you're having trouble molding your cake balls, do the best you can and stick them in the refrigerator for at least 2 hours. Once the cake balls are good and cold, roll them on a flat surface until they are nice and round.

If Making Cake Pops

Dip the end of the popsicle stick into the melted chocolate before putting in the cake pop to help the stick stay put. Be sure to match chocolate color and do this before drizzling.

Decoration Tips

These red velvet cake balls can be switched up for any holiday by changing the color of chocolate drizzle and sprinkles. Change it to green for St. Patricks Day or add green icing for Christmas with holly sprinkles.
