CAST APPLICATION

Once the extremity has been prepared with stockinette and padding and placed in the desired position, the plaster or fiberglass material is applied. The casting material is wrapped circumferentially, with each roll overlapping the previous layer by 50 percent.

Where is the plaster placed when applying a cast? ›

Do not wring out plaster. Apply the casting material circumferentially from distal to proximal, overlapping the underlying layer by half the width of the casting material. Use 8 to 10 layers of plaster (typically) or 2 to 4 layers of fiberglass to ensure adequate strength of the cast.

What happens if water goes in plaster cast? ›

A wet cast can lead to skin irritation or infection. Plaster casts and fiberglass casts with conventional padding aren't waterproof. Keep your child's cast dry during baths or showers by covering it with two layers of plastic, sealed with a rubber band or duct tape.

How do you smooth plaster cast? ›

You can rescue those cute casts by gently brushing over the surface with a thin layer of wet plaster, making sure to wet the surface of the cast so that the new plaster can bond with the old plaster. Once the fresh plaster is dry you can gently sand any rough edges. Once painted you really won't see it!
